US Representative David Wu (吳振偉), the first-ever Taiwan-born US Congressman, has expressed his support for President Chen Shui-bian's (陳水扁) plan to change the word "Taipei" to "Taiwan" in the official name of the country's representative offices in the US. In an April 22 letter to Chen, the Oregon Democrat wrote that the name "Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office" instead of the current name "Taipei Econo-mic and Cultural Office" "more accurately reflects the characteristics of your government." In his letter, Wu went on to note that "I appreciate such a move to clarify the island-wide representative nature of your offices in the United States." The congressman wrote the letter after it came to his attention that, in addition to adding the word "Taiwan" in Roman script to ROC passports, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is also planning to change the name of Taiwan's representative offices in the US.
