The gap between the wages of Taiwanese and foreign workers is continuing to narrow, with the average monthly salary of foreign workers now about 80 percent of that of their Taiwanese counter-parts, according to the results of a government poll. The survey, conducted recently by the Council of Labor Affairs, shows that the monthly wages of foreign workers averaged NT$19,502 (US$557) last year, accounting for 79 percent of the average NT$24,681 for domestic workers and down by NT$1,457 from the 2000 level. A shortened work schedule of 24.3 hours per month, due mainly to a reduction in overtime, was blamed for the drop, which was also due to the implementation of a five-day work-week last year, the poll pointed out. There were 304,650 foreign workers in Taiwan last year, down 21,910 from 2000, the first such decline in history.
