Cross-strait tech forum opens

STAFF WRITER

The annual Beijing-Taiwan Science and Technology Forum, a two-day forum to discuss cooperation and competition in the high-tech industry across the Taiwan Strait, will kick off in Beijing May today.

Several business leaders from both sides, including Powerchip Semiconductor Corp Chairman Frank Huang (黃崇仁), Quanta Computer Inc CEO Barry Lam (林百里), Acer Inc President Wang Chen-tang (王振堂), Via Technologies Inc CEO Chen Wen-chi (陳文琦) and a number of bureau chiefs in China of IBM, Cisco and Motorola, have been invited to attend the event, according to the organizers.

In view of the inevitable trend of globalization, these business leaders will also discuss the division of labor in related fields between Taiwan and China, they said.

Taiwan Semiconductor Man-ufacturing Co (台積電) Chairman Morris Chang (張忠謀) was invited to attend the forum last year but is not on the list this time.

Former premier Vincent Siew (蕭萬長), whose attendance at last year's forum drew much attention, will not participate this year but send a delegate in his place, the organizers said.
