Taiwan was far behind other Asian countries in terms of tourist arrivals, but still ranked high in the number of outgoing tourists, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications said yesterday.
The amount of people traveling to Taiwan has not increased over the past few years. According to MOTC statistics, only 2.6 million tourist arrivals were recorded in 2000, vastly outnumbered by China's 72 million, Hong Kong's 13 million, Malaysia's 10 million, Thailand's nine million, Singapore's seven million, South Korea's 5.3 million, Indonesia's five million and Japan's 4.7 million.
