The gap between the wages of Taiwan workers and foreign laborers is narrowing, with the average monthly salary of foreign workers now about 80 percent of that of their Taiwan counterparts, according to the results of the survey conducted recently by the Council of Labor Affairs.
The poll shows that the monthly wages of foreign laborers in Taiwan averaged NT$19,502 (US$557.2) last year, about 79 percent of the average NT$24,681 for domestic workers but down by NT$1,457 from the year before.
A shortened work period of 24.3 hours per month, mainly because of a reduction in overtime and the government's implementation of a five-day work week last year, was blamed for the drop.
