Japanese maker of glass to construct facilities in Taipei

EXPANSION PLANS: Nippon Electric Glass says it will invest in new plants worth US$38.5 million in Taiwan and South Korea to meet rising demand for liquid crystal displays

Japan's Nippon Electric Glass Co said yesterday it plans to invest ?2 billion to ?3 billion to build a plant in Taipei producing glass used for liquid crystal displays (LCD), a company spokesman said yesterday.

The investment is part of a ?5 billion (US$38.5 million) expansion in South Korea and Taiwan to meet rising local demand.

The production facilities, to be built by the end of this year, together are expected to generate sales of ?12 billion in the first year, the company's spokesman said.

The Taipei plant will have an annual output capacity of 600,000m2 of the glass.

In South Korea, the company will set up a joint venture with a local company in the central part of the country.

The production capacity of the South Korean factory and the investment involved will be about the same as in Taiwan.

NEG has decided to undertake production in South Korea and Taiwan to meet what is expected to be an increase of 50-80 percent in local demand for glass used for LCDs over the coming two years.

Major LCD makers such as Japan's Asahi Glass Co and Corning Inc of the US are already active in South Korea and Taiwan.

Nippon Electric Glass has so far produced such glass in Japan only, exporting half the output to overseas markets.

Nippon Electric Glass currently holds a 17 percent share of the world market for glass used for LCDs, the third-largest share.

Corning of the US holds first place with a share of 50 percent, followed by Japan's Asahi with a share of just over 20 percent.
