Carmakers unfazed by WTO entry

The nation's WTO entry is expected to provide stiffer competition for many local industries, including the auto market. But Jeffrey Shen, president of Ford Lio Ho Motor Co, says Taiwan's carmakers will remain competitive. last week, he talked with `Taipei Times' staff reporter Joyce Huang about possible price fluctuations and the outlook for the domestic sector

TT: Will you then move your operations to China?

Shen: No. Ford looks at its base [in Taiwan] as the design and research center for the Asia-Pacific region. Even if Ford enters the greater China market, our marketing experience tells us that any cars that sell in Taiwan will later sell in China.

Therefore, Taiwan-trained salesmen will play a very important role in China in the future. Thus, we can't possibly withdraw our Taiwan base and move to China.
