Industrialists attending a symposium yesterday on challenges and changes facing Taiwan's high-tech industries stressed the importance of the government setting up a certification standard applicable to locally-made as well as imported products.
Shen Yen-shih (沈燕士), chairman of the Apex Biotechnology Corp (五鼎生技), said that Taiwan-ese manufacturers will face fiercer competition from international corporations now that Taiwan has become a member of the WTO.
While intellectual property and patent rights will be of great importance to competitiveness, Shen suggested that local manufacturers should have long-term research plans and develop their own patent products.
Hu Ting-hua (胡定華), chairman of Macronix said that local manufacturers in general were weak in acquiring intellectual property rights.
