Paraguay beef may soon be on menus in Taiwan

CNA , ASUNCION

Paraguay is expected to begin exporting beef and related products to Taiwan shortly after authorities relax quarantine restrictions on Paraguayan meat products, the ABC Daily reported Thursday.

The daily quoted Paraguay's Vice Foreign Minister Rigoberto Gauto Vielman as saying that the first batch of 220 tonnes of beef is expected to be shipped soon after the ROC government lifts its ban on Paraguayan beef imports imposed several years ago after several cattle raised in the South American country were confirmed to have been affected by foot-and-mouth disease.

The Paraguayan government recently dispatched quarantine inspection papers on Paraguayan beef products to ROC agencies and the papers are expected to be recognized soon by the Taiwan government, Gauto said.

Meanwhile, Gauto was quoted in the report as saying that the Taiwan government is also considering granting a quota permit to allow for the import of organic sugar from Paraguay.

If the quota plan is approved, Paraguay is expected to export some 10,000 to 15,000 tonnes of organic sugar to Taiwan annually, Gauto added.

Gauto visited Taiwan in late October, during which he met with senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Economic Affairs to exchange views on the potential export deals and on ways to strengthen bilateral ties between the two countries.
