Herbal medicine fans gear up for marketing meeting

CNA , TAIPEI

The Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI, 工研院) will sponsor a seminar at the Grand Hotel in Taipei today, introducing German experience in research and development in herbal medicine and international marketing of phytomedicines.

A spokesman from the research institute said yesterday that experts from the renown German drug manufacturer, Dr. Willmar Schwabe Pharmaceuticals, as well as university professors have been invited to speak at the seminar.

Dr. Willmar Schwabe Pharmaceuticals specializes in the field of plant-derived pharmaceuticals. One of the company's most renown products is ensaculin, a neuronal activator for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. Derived from naturally occurring coumarins, ensaculin has been proven in clinical trials to be able to stimulate interaction with several transmitter and receptor systems, which are known to be diminished by Alzheimer's disease.

The spokesman said that the Chinese have used herbs in medical treatment for thousands of years, adding that the government has instructed the Ministry of Economic Affairs and the ITRI to advance the herbal medicine research and development as well as its commercialization.

He also pointed out that in terms of clinical studies, regulatory status and international marketing, the Chinese have much to learn from the West.

The spokesman said the institute has arranged five speeches to be delivered at the seminar, including one titled "Industrial Research and Clinical Studies," by Dr. Karl-Heinz Stumpf, managing director and head of the Research and Development Division of Dr. Willmar Schwabe GmbH, Pharmaceuticals, as well as "Prospects of Phytomedicinal Research and Market Demands," by Professor Theodor Dingermann of the Institute for Pharmaceutical Biology, Goethe University in Frankfurt.

Speeches titled "Pharmaceutical Quality of Herbal Medicines as a Basis of Clinical Efficacy," by Dr. Gerhard Franz of the University of Regensburg, and "The Latest Regulatory Status and Entry Requirements for Herbal Products in European Countries, by Christine Mayer Nicolai, of the Federal Federation of Pharmaceutical Industry, Germany.
