How was Taiwan's computer business helped by young people's interest in arcade games 20 years ago? How did United Microelec-tronics Corp (UMC, 聯電) make the transition from producing integrated circuits for telephones to becoming the second-largest maker of semi-conductors for brand-name companies?
Starting tonight at 10pm, a 12-part documentary series entitled "Green Silicon Island, Taiwan",will try to answer these questions.
It will air on the Public TV channel every Saturday from through December.
The series was produced by Socoly Film Production (子易電影) and was sponsored by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, the Institute for Information Technology (資策會) and VIA Technologies Inc (威盛電子).
UMC chairman Robert Tsao (曹興誠) is one of the IT tycoons interviewed for the series.
