    Taiwan's trade with China declines 4.2 percent on year

    Indirect trade between Taiwan and China in the January to May period stood at US$11.943 billion, down 4.2 percent on the year, and accounting for 11.9 percent of Taiwan's foreign trade, according to data released yesterday by the Board of Foreign Trade under the Ministry of Economic Affairs.

    Indirect exports to China in the first five months this year fell 4.7 percent on the year to US$9.507 billion, while indirect imports fell 2.1 percent to US$2.436 billion in the period.

    Taiwan's indirect trade surplus with China for the January-May period fell 5.6 percent on the year to US$7.071 billion. In May alone, indirect exports fell 18.9 percent, while imports fell 16.7 percent on the year.

    The BOFT also included statistics from Hong Kong customs, which showed that trade via Hong Kong fell 4.9 percent on the year in the January to May period.
