Conference must take heed of meltdown fears

With the Economic Development Advisory Conference holding its first official meeting yesterday, staff reporter Stanley Chou met last week with People First Party representative to the body, Norman Yin, a banking professor at National Chengchi University to hear his views on where the conference should be focusing its attention

Yin: The conference itself has a political purpose. The DPP wants to use it as an election tool for the year-end general elections. Solving economic problems is only one goal of the multi-purpose conference. Some speculate that the conference will be a shield for President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) to fend off pressure from the DPP internally when dealing with China policy -- it's possible.
