Vice Economic Affairs Minister Chen Ruey-long (陳瑞隆) on yesterday urged all economic members of the APEC forum to continue to support the policies of the APEC Intellectual Property Experts' Group (IPEG) and its dialogue mechanism.

Addressing the opening of an IPEG conference and an APEC seminar on intellectual property rights in the era of the new economy held at the Grand Formosa Taichung, Chen stressed the significance of the knowledge-based economy, and made known Taiwan's policies and determination regarding the protection of intellectual property rights.

More than 200 delegates, including 43 officials from 15 APEC member nations and economic organizations, attended the seminar, which was the final activity of a four-day meeting of the IPEG in Taichung.

During the one-day seminar, the Asia-Pacific experts on intellectual property rights exchanged views and research results in three sessions dealing separately with the topics of the digital agenda in the new economy, patent claim interpretations and infringement assessment standards, and patent commercialization and technology transfers.

During the first two days of the IPEG gathering, Taiwan officials from the Bureau of Intellectual Property under the Ministry of Economic Affairs presented papers related to "famous trademarks" and the "protection of the bio-tech industry" at the meeting, which was presided over by group chairman Akira Kobayashi of Japan.

Other discussions centered on issues related to policy dialogue, and the obtaining and systemization of intellectual property rights among APEC members.

On the third day of the meeting, the participants visited the headquarters of Giant, one of the world's top high-end bicycle manufacturers, the Taichung Brewery under the Taiwan Tobacco and Wine Monopoly Bureau (菸酒公賣局), and the National Museum of Natural Sciences (自然科學博物館).
