Taiwan replaces Japan as top notebook maker

DPA , TAIPEI

Taiwan has replaced Japan as the world's largest notebook personal computer maker, the Information Industry Institute (III) said yesterday.

This year Taiwan will manufacture US$10.25 billion worth of notebook PCs, up 22.1 percent from 1998, while last year's output totalled US$6.09 billion, representing 39.2 percent of the world market, the institute said.

Taiwan already is the world's largest desktop PC manufacturer and between 1998 and 2000, Taiwan's notebook PC output is estimated to increase by 30 percent annually, compared to the 14 percent global annual rise.

The US computer manufacturer Dell has most of its notebook PCs made in Taiwan.

Other large international PC makers, such as Compaq, purchase 60 percent of its components for its notebook PC production in Taiwan.
