Five members of a family lost their lives yesterday in a fire that broke out in the early hours of the morning at their bakery in Changhua County.
The family-run bakery belonged to 52-year-old Ho Nan-sheng (何南昇), who died in the fire, along with both his parents, his wife and their 17-year-old daughter. The couple’s son, who was at his university in Taipei when the tragedy occurred, is the only surviving member.
Changhua County firefighters extinguished the fire after it was reported by neighbors, but could not save the occupants. Rescuers found the charred remains of the victims on the first and second floors of the building on Zhongshan Road in Yuanlin (員林).
The bakery was on the ground floor, while the Ho family lived on the second floor, the Changhua fire department said.
The cause of the fire, which broke out sometime after 6am, is under investigation, it said.
Changhua County Commissioner Ko Cheng-fang (柯呈枋) inspected the site a yesterday afternoon and offered Ho’s son a NT$60,000 consolation fund.
He said the county would assist the son with funeral arrangements. He also urged the public to be careful handling electricity.
