The number of YouBikes rentals surged 10-fold last year compared with rentals in 2012, Taipei’s Department of Budget, Accounting and Statistics said on Wednesday.
The YouBike rental system has become increasingly popular since it was established in 2009, with just 11 rental stations and 500 bikes. As of the end of last year, there were 136 rental stations and 4,545 bikes for hire, the department said.
The number of stations and bicycles rose 1.8 times and 1.7 times respectively last year compared with the previous year, the department said.
Meanwhile, since an upgraded version of the YouBike joined the service in August 2012, the number of rentals surged significantly, increasing from 999,000 in 2012 to nearly 10 million last year, the department said.
Statistics from the city’s Department of Transportation show that daily ridership on the Taipei Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) system increased by 94,000 passengers, or 5.7 percent, to 1.74 million last year from 2012.
Bus ridership declined by 66,000 passengers, or 3.9 percent, to 1.62 million per day last year, indicating that the popularity of public bus services is declining as the MRT system expands.
