Greater Taichung Government officials and councilors are releasing their own lines of calendars, stationery and other trinkets as Lunar New Year giveaways for constituents.
Taichung Councilor Yang Tien-tsung (楊典宗) of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) said his own line of calendars and political pamphlets — featuring photographs of and messages written by himself working with the DPP’s Greater Taichung mayoral candidate Legislator Lin Chia-lung (林佳龍) — were being produced.
“Lin Chia-lung has done a great deal of work and has been involved in local projects and economic development for the coastal townships of Taichung. Lin’s contributions there and his accomplishments are presented in the stationery and pamphlets,” Yang said.
“We are hopeful that both of us will win our seats in the mayoral and councilor elections at the end of this year,” Yang said.
DPP Taichung Councilor Huang Kuo-shu (黃國書) has often written Spring Festival couplets (春聯) as goodwill gifts for constituents.
Huang said this year he chose Fu Kang An Le (富康安樂), which means “Prosperity, Good Health, Peace and Happiness,” for the couplets.
The gifts are a hit in Taichung with many people hoping to receive one, Huang said, adding that a number of government agencies have hung Huang’s couplet on the entrances to their offices.
“Last year, everyone in Taiwan felt the impact of the gloomy, bleak economy. We also had all kinds of tainted food scandals. The public worried about food safety and their health. So I chose these four words to convey my hope that everyone can eat well, enjoy life and have their spiritual and material needs fulfilled,” Huang said.
Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Taichung Councilor Huang Hsin-hui (黃馨慧) in the past has sent out calendars adorned with the image of the goddess Guanyin, painted by the renowned artist Wang Shuang-kuan (王雙寬).
“The calendar is popular with Buddhists and the elder generation. There are plenty of telephone calls to the office each year, even before December, from people requesting a copy,” she said.
DPP Taichung Councilor Lai Chia-wei (賴佳微) combines the Lunar New Year give-away with her love of pets by commissioning a calendar with pictures of herself and her cat.
“This way, we accompany people the whole year and also promote adopting pets instead of buying the animals,” she said.
