Before her work on award-winning music videos, Taiwan-born Mego Lin (林宥辰) considered careers in advertising and fine art before she finally “stumbled” into success in cinematography.
Lin’s career has taken off thanks to her contributions on two videos for songs by US hip-hop duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis: Same Love, which was awarded Best Video with a Social Message at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards, and Can’t Hold Us, which won the Best Cinematography award at the same ceremony in recognition of the hard work on the part of Lin and her partners.
Lin’s heart was set on pursuing art when she left Taiwan to study in the US seven years ago, she said. It was there, while studying advertising at the University of Oregon, that she began to take classes to refine her still photography skills.
She did not make the transition to motion pictures until three years ago, when she started graduate studies at the prestigious Art Center College of Design in California and began an internship at a music video production company.
Since the two videos won at the Video Music Awards in late August, she has seen a spike in interested clients, she said, shortly after returning from shooting in Paris, London and Barcelona.
As for her dreams, Lin whimsically said the artist she would want to work with most is the late “King of Pop,” Michael Jackson.
Her more realistic aspirations, meanwhile, are in film, particularly working on movies about human nature.
