The US attaches high value to Taiwan’s role in the APEC forum, a high-ranking US official said on Thursday.

Washington welcomes good relations across the Taiwan Strait and will continue to work hard on trade and investment throughout the Asia-Pacific region, US Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Scot Marciel said.

“Taiwan has full membership in APEC and plays a very important role, which we highly value,” Marciel said during a conference on security and economic issues in the Asia-Pacific, ahead of the East Asia Summit (EAS) in Brunei and the APEC summit in Indonesia next month.

On the US’ strategic rebalancing toward Asia, he said the policy is not expected to undergo any significant changes, although its details may be altered.

As part of its rebalancing policy, the US is dealing with China as a partner so as to engage China constructively in international affairs, he said.

He reiterated that the US government does not take sides in the territorial disputes and will continue to support the discussions on a code of conduct in the South China Sea.
