The National Immigration Agency (NIA) yesterday began issuing one-year multiple entry visas to individual Chinese tourists, a move that the Tourism Bureau said is aimed at increasing visitor numbers.

The bureau said the decision to issue the one-year multiple entry visas was reached after the agency consulted with the bureau and the tourism industry.

Eligible applicants include Chinese tourists who have visited the nation not as part of a tour group twice in the past 12 months, and Chinese residents who have been given multiple travel documents by the Chinese authorities allowing them to visit Taiwan, the bureau said.

According to NIA data, 30,281 individual Chinese tourists visited in 2011, the first year Taiwan began allowing such visits.

Last year, 191,148 individual tourists visited and the figure for this year had reached 212,834 as of July 5, the data show.
