For the first time, a Taiwanese cartoonist has been nominated for a prize at the Angouleme International Comics Festival, the largest comics show in Europe, the organizers of a Taiwanese delegation to the festival said yesterday.

Tu Tse-wei (杜哲維), 28, who goes by the pen name Ahn Zhe (安哲), is one of the 20 finalists selected from more than 400 applicants worldwide for the young talent award at the annual festival, which is scheduled to run from Jan. 31 to Feb. 3 in Angouleme, France.

Tu’s entry is a three-page story, Nettoyeur (Cleaner), which tells how a young boy helps a whale to clean its blowhole on the surface of a polluted ocean.
