The Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) has recently distributed handbooks to party members and supporters to explain its policies and address public concerns in its latest effort to promote the policies and defend its achievements.

The 64-page promotional handbook addresses public concerns in a question-and-answer format, and tackles issues such as granting medical parole to former president Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) and calls for a national affairs conference.

It also includes President Ma Ying-jeou’s (馬英九) key remarks on cross-strait policies and other issues. The party has posted the content of the handbook on its Facebook page to reach younger people, KMT spokesman Yin Wei (殷瑋) said.

He said the handbook aimed to promote the KMT’s policies and the government’s achievements in a more effective way. For example, on the party’s stance on medial parole for Chen, the handbook provides the KMT’s argument against parole and explains the party’s suggestions that Chen should visit the hospital under the supervision of a guardian.

The government’s recent efforts to implement pension reform are also included in the handbook, he said.

“We believe that the handbook will help the public better understand our policies. We will update the information in the handbook and put it online,” he said.

As Ma’s administration continued to suffer low approval ratings amid growing public discontent over the sluggish economy, among other issues, the KMT has responded by stepping up its efforts to defend the government’s performance against the Democratic Progressive Party’s (DPP) challenges.

The KMT’s Culture and Communication Commission has posted articles on the party’s Facebook page defending the Ma administration, while the Presidential Office has also turned to social networking to defend Ma’s performance.
