Far EasTone Telecommunications, one of the nation’s major telecoms operators, topped the list of consumer complaints filed this year in Taipei, the city government said yesterday.
Far EasTone led the list of companies that had received the highest number of complaints, with 300 consumer complaints filed with the city government’s consumer ombudsmen between January and last month, over problems such as poor 3G wireless reception, international roaming fees and service plans.
Game First International, an online game operation agency, was second on the list with 185 complaints filed so far this year, mostly over service disruption. Wall Street Institute of English, Yahoo Hong Kong and ezTravel rounded out the top five, the Taipei City Government’s Law and Regulations Commission said.
Commission head Tsai Li-wen (蔡立文) said most of the complaints against Far EasTone were about the upload time limit in its service plans and its roaming fee policy.
The Wall Street Institute of English generated many complaints because it went bankrupt without informing students, forcing consumers to seek assistance from the commission to secure fee reimbursements.
Complaints against Yahoo were mainly about disputes over online shopping and the disclosure of personal information without consent, while complaints against ezTravel were about itinerary changes in package tours, he said.
The commission also issued consumer warnings against PChome Online and Ruten Online for their reluctance to discuss how they planned to deal with complaints from consumers.
Chen Hsin-cheng (陳信誠), Taipei’s chief consumer ombudsman, said the companies may face fines of up to NT$300,000 (US$10,000) for refusing to negotiate or failing to respond to complaints in accordance with the Consumer Act (消費者保護法).
However, he added that the city government had not fined any of the above-mentioned companies.
Tsai said the Taipei City Government would continue to strive to protect consumers’ rights and he encouraged consumers to telephone 1950 or (02) 2725-6169 if they have any complaint about a company or product.
