In celebration of its 115th anniversary tomorrow, Taipei’s Zhongshan Girls’ High School has created 3,500 uniform-clad brown teddy bears carrying a miniature schoolbag, causing a sensation on campus and among alumni.

The school said it has received 2,000 orders for the 30cm tall limited-edition mascot, with some alumni also asking the school to place orders on their behalf.

The school’s student affairs office director, Lin Chien-hui (林千惠) said that they had been marking school anniversaries with ornamental badges for several years and decided to try something different this year, drawing inspiration from the mascots of overseas schools.

“In an effort to design a one-of-a-kind mascot, we invited students to select their favorites from a series of teddy bears that came in different styles, and then called two meetings of class representatives to decide the name of the mascot,” Lin said, adding that the school has filed a design patent application for the popular bears.

The mascot is named “Zhongshan Beary Good (中山熊蓋讚),” which was proposed by third-grade student Lee Wan-ling (李婉陵), who said she could not get enough of the furry mascot after laying her eyes on it.

Lin said that the bears, which are sold at NT$290 if pre-ordered and at NT$320 for ordinary purchases, would be made available to the general public at the school’s scheduled anniversary celebration at a special price of NT$299.

The school is also planning to set up statues of the mascot around the campus as public art installations, Lin said.

She added that the school would invite students from other schools in the area to take part in an inter-school relay race and a recreational competition as part of its anniversary celebration.

Meanwhile, Taipei Municipal Jianguo High School is set to celebrate its 114th anniversary tomorrow with an introduction to the first 3D virtual reality classroom at any high school nationwide.
