The National Police Agency is reminding the public to be vigilant when buying concert tickets online as it has recently received a number of reports about fraudulent ticket vendors from fans of rock band Mayday (五月天).

The popular band is slated to hold concerts in Greater Kaoshiung at the end of the year.

Prices for Mayday’s “Nowhere World Tour” tickets range from NT$480 to NT$3,580.

Online scams appear to have popped up to take advantage of Mayday fans’ fever-pitch demand to see the band play.

The agency’s “165” anti-fraud telephone line said that in the period between Sept. 8 and Tuesday, it received 55 reports of alleged scams involving Mayday concert tickets, with victims reporting a total loss of more than NT$500,000.

Most individuals have lost between NT$5,000 and NT$6,000, with the biggest loss reported by a 31-year-old surnamed Chen (陳) who said he got cheated out of NT$16,000 when he attempted to buy four tickets, the agency said.

In view of the growing number of cases, the agency advised the public to be very careful when engaging in online transactions, and to choose reputable vendors and examine a seller’s track record before paying.
