Three Taiwanese tourists who traveled to the Philippine resort island of Boracay have been diagnosed with shigellosis, or bacillary dysentery, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) said yesterday.
Food may have been the source of the infection, according to a preliminary investigation, CDC Deputy Director-General Chou Jih-haw (周志浩) said.
The patients traveled with three different tour groups from June 19 to 24 and it is suspected they ate contaminated food at the same restaurant, he said.
Bacillary dysentery is spread through the consumption of polluted food or water and it can result in symptoms ranging from mild abdominal discomfort to diarrhea, fever and vomiting.
The patients, a 21-year-old female and two males aged 34 and 48, had fevers and diarrhea at the airport when they arrived back in Taiwan, Chou said. About 80 other members from the three tour groups were monitored for the foodborne disease, he said, and 18 were found with possible symptoms.
