An annual TV music show that divides pop singers into competing red and white teams will be broadcast on Jan. 22, featuring well-known Asian stars in a battle for the title.

South Korean girl groups Wonder Girls and Miss A, Taiwanese pop divas A-mei (張惠妹) and Elva Hsiao (蕭亞軒), singer Jam Hsiao (蕭敬騰), rock band Mayday and Japan’s Kana Nishino were among about 30 groups and pop artists invited to perform at the Red White Superstar Concert.

The show was recorded on Saturday. The opening act saw dancer Elva Hsiao performing Miss Elva and I Love Me for the red team. She faced off against South Korean boy band ZE:A, also known as Children of Empire.

About 10,000 cheering fans attended the show, which was produced by the Taiwan Television Enterprise (TTV) for a third year at a cost of NT$30 million (US$992,600).

Jam Hsiao and Chinese armless pianist Liu Wei (劉偉), who rose to fame after a performance on China’s Got Talent, moved the audience with a piano duet of the love song New Endless Love.

Taiwanese singer and actress Ariel Lin (林依晨) and actor Wilson Chen (陳柏霖), who gained popularity on the TV drama In Time with You, also stirred the crowd with their performances.

Chen, who said it was his first time playing with a band on stage, pounded away on his guitar and sang the theme song for In Time with You to a roaring crowd.

Members of the Wonder Girls said on Friday at a press conference that they were happy to have the chance to perform on stage with Miss A and were not worried about being overshadowed.

The Superstar Concert is a spin off of Japan’s Red and White Song Battle, which also pits -artists against one another in red and white teams.

The concert, held at the Taipei Arena, is to be broadcast at 7pm on the Lunar New Year’s Eve.
