More than 1,000 cultivated fireflies will be released into the wild in Ilan County's Sanhsing Township (三星) this coming week as a show of the township's recent efforts to conserve the species, officials said yesterday. The officials said that it was once common to see great numbers of fireflies lighting up the fields on summer nights in Sanhsing, but that their numbers had diminished in recent years owing to the overuse of pesticides. As part of the efforts, the township obtained a grant of NT$1 million (US$30,000) from the Council of Agriculture early this year for a project aimed at reproducing fireflies, the officials said. With more than 1,000 fireflies successfully reproduced over the past six months using the method, the township was preparing to release them into the wild at the Changpi Lake (長埤湖) scenic area on Wednesday, they said.
