The Taichung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station under the Council of Agriculture has produced two new organic vegetable-growing media that are resistant to high temperature, high humidity and common vermin, a researcher at the station said yesterday. According to the station, the two new media have been dubbed TaiMod-3 and TaiMod-4. TaiMod-3 is made from golden mushroom stems, ground rice hulls and coconut fiber, while TaiMod-4 consists of golden mushroom stems and ground rice hulls. The researcher said the station was applying for patents for the media and looked forward to transferring production techniques to local manufacturers for mass production. He said that many local farmers use imported media for vegetables. However, these products are susceptible to high temperatures and this often results in lower production output, which is why the station started the search for new organic media a couple of years ago, he said.
