Man sentenced to life for killing romantic rival

By Jason Pan  /  Staff reporter

The Hsinchu District Court yesterday sentenced a 22-year-old man to life in prison for killing a romantic rival last year, while three accomplices were sentenced to jail terms of 11 to 13 years.

Luo Yi-hao (駱奕豪) and his accomplices tied up a man surnamed Ho (何), 27, and beat him to death, the court said.

Luo told the court that he believed Ho was dating his then-16-year-old girlfriend.

Luo learned that Ho was to meet with the girl at a railway station on July 6 last year, and went there with his accomplices to wait for him, investigators said.

The men tricked Ho into getting into their car and drove to a rural location in Miaoli County, investigators added.

After beating him to death, Luo put Ho’s body in a plastic garbage bag and put it into the trunk, they said.

Luo dumped the body at a cemetery, where it was found by residents, who called the police, they said.

The suspects deserve severe punishment, as they resorted to violence and killed the victim over relationship issues, which should have been dealt with in reasonable ways, the court said in its ruling.

“Luo as the principal figure made plans and preparations, such as purchasing the tools to carry out the murder,” it said.

It was the first ruling in the case and can be appealed.
