“If you want to do business in a country, you must comply with the laws of that country,” Li told the forum at the Institute for China-America Studies, adding that failure to do so would result in disciplinary measures.

“China wants a candid relationship with the US and any issue is open for discussion, except the ‘Taiwan problem,’” Li said.

“For China, Taiwan is not a foreign relations topic, it is an issue of sovereignty,” he added.

Under the “one China” framework, the US-Taiwan relationship can also advance, but there are some who want to destroy that framework, Li said.

The US’ Taiwan Travel Act is “a grave mistake,” he said.

The act, signed by US President Donald Trump on March 16, encourages mutual visits between Taiwanese and US high-level officials.

Li also criticized the US’ National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2018, which contains provisions favorable to Taiwan’s defense, saying: “These moves will make the possible impossible.”

No Chinese official will ever compromise on the issue of Taiwan, he added.
