The Central Weather Bureau confirmed that Tropical Storm Lupit formed at 2am yesterday, adding that chances that the storm would affect the nation are very low.

Lupit means “cruelty” or “savagery” in Filipino.

As of 2pm yesterday, the center of the storm was 3,760km northeast of Taipei and 1,820km east of Japan. It was moving north at 40kph.

The storm is unlikely to affect Taiwan or Japan, the bureau said.

However, most of the nation is to continue experiencing high temperatures this week, the bureau said.

Bureau forecaster Chen Yi-hsou (陳伊秀) said the mercury would hit 36°C in the north and 35°C in central Taiwan.

Although the highs for this week are forecast to be a little lower than last week, the apparent temperature — caused by the combined effects of temperature, humidity and wind speed — could exceed 41°C, she said.

The bureau said that chances of temporary afternoon thundershowers would be high in the plains in southern Taiwan today and tomorrow as the high-pressure system moves slightly northward.

Between Wednesday and Saturday, afternoon thundershowers are forecast for the northeast, as well as in mountainous areas.
