Four Taiwanese nabbed in Bangkok for bank card fraud

Staff writer, with CNA

Taiwanese diplomats on Sunday visited four Taiwanese arrested in Bangkok for allegedly using counterfeit bank cards, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Thailand has been kept up to date about the case and yesterday identified the four Taiwanese in custody, the ministry said.

Thai police arrested the four after two of them were seen acting suspiciously on a Bangkok street. They said 29 suspected counterfeit cards and a large amount of cash were found on the pair.

Equipment used to make counterfeit bank cards and the two other suspects were found at the place the four allegedly rented in Bangkok, the police said.

The second pair reportedly tried to bribe police officers with 300,000 baht (US$8,558), but it was rejected.

An initial investigation found that the four entered Thailand in May on tourist visas.

Thai police said that if found guilty of counterfeiting bank cards and bribery, the four could face at least five years in prison and a fine of 100,000 baht.
