The Ministry of National Defense said it will search for the warhead of a missile that was mistakenly fired by the navy on Friday, a person with knowledge of the matter said yesterday.

The warhead of the Hsiung Feng III supersonic missile could contain confidential or high-tech information and the Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology has advised the military that it should retrieve it from the sea, the source said.

The military declined to reveal when the search would begin or what aircraft or ships would be used in the search.

The missile is believed to have plunged into the sea and the institute is to assess if there is confidential information or equipment on its warhead, Navy Command Headquarters Chief of Staff Vice Admiral Mei Chia-shu (梅家樹) said.

One of the navy’s 500-tonne Chinchiang-class corvettes accidentally launched the missile from Zuoying Military Harbor in Kaohsiung at 8:15am on Friday.

The missile traveled for more than two minutes before hitting the Hsiang Li Sheng (翔利昇) fishing boat, killing the boat’s captain and injuring three crew members.
