Hung Wen Senior High School in Taichung started this semester its first elective course on cockroaches in an attempt to overturn the stereotypical view that cockroaches are dirty.
The course is also designed to meet the Ministry of Education’s policy to encourage high-school students to take unique courses.
Biology teacher Chen Chun-ying (陳俊穎) said he developed an interest in cockroaches after dissecting the insect when he was studying at National Chung Hsing University, adding that he now keeps Madagascar hissing cockroaches as pets.

The Madagascar hissing cockroach is one of the largest known cockroach species, Chen said, adding that they do not smell.
The cockroaches most commonly seen in homes — the German cockroach (Blattella germanica) and the American cockraoch (Periplaneta americana ) — exude a smell, which serves as a location signal that tells other cockroaches where they are, Chen said.
People typically assume that the presence of cockroaches is indicative of unsanitary conditions, but they can learn a lot from studying cockroaches, he said.

Chen said his course examines the insect’s digestive, reproductive, muscular and nervous systems.
Of the 75 species of cockroaches found in Taiwan, less than 10 are commonly seen in homes, he said, adding that the most common are the German and American cockroaches, while other species mostly live in the mountains and woods.
Chen said that the American cockroach is used in Chinese medicine to help treat wounds and chronic gastritis, adding that the species is a waste disposer that aides in the recycling of matter.
Cockroaches are extremely hardy, capable of living for a month without food or water, and although they only mate once, the female cockroach lays more than 10,000 eggs, he said.
Cockroaches can detect danger through their antennas, and their reaction is to charge forward, Chen said, adding that if you want to hit them, you should aim for the space in front of them.
However, he said he wished humans and cockroaches could live together in harmony, and asked that people refrain from killing them with newspapers and shoes.
Although cockroaches seem to cling tenaciously to life, Chen said it is actually difficult to keep them as pets.
Madagascar cockroaches or the Turkestan cockroach are the two species best kept as pets. As long as they have water and bird feed for protein, they are able to feed themselves, he said.
Pet cockroaches should be kept in specimen boxes, which should be kept in another cardboard box for double-layering so the insects can hide, he said.
Keeping pet roaches might not be a popular way to meet girls though. Chen said there was a girl who rejected him because of his hobby.
The Taipei Department of Health yesterday said it has launched a probe into a restaurant at Far Eastern Sogo Xinyi A13 Department Store after a customer died of suspected food poisoning. A preliminary investigation on Sunday found missing employee health status reports and unsanitary kitchen utensils at Polam Kopitiam (寶林茶室) in the department store’s basement food court, the department said. No direct relationship between the food poisoning death and the restaurant was established, as no food from the day of the incident was available for testing and no other customers had reported health complaints, it said, adding that the investigation is ongoing. REVENGE TRAVEL: A surge in ticket prices should ease this year, but inflation would likely keep tickets at a higher price than before the pandemic Scoot is to offer six additional flights between Singapore and Northeast Asia, with all routes transiting Taipei from April 1, as the budget airline continues to resume operations that were paused during the COVID-19 pandemic, a Scoot official said on Thursday. Vice president of sales Lee Yong Sin (李榮新) said at a gathering with reporters in Taipei that the number of flights from Singapore to Japan and South Korea with a stop in Taiwan would increase from 15 to 21 each week. That change means the number of the Singapore-Taiwan-Tokyo flights per week would increase from seven to 12, while Singapore-Taiwan-Seoul
BAD NEIGHBORS: China took fourth place among countries spreading disinformation, with Hong Kong being used as a hub to spread propaganda, a V-Dem study found Taiwan has been rated as the country most affected by disinformation for the 11th consecutive year in a study by the global research project Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem). The nation continues to be a target of disinformation originating from China, and Hong Kong is increasingly being used as a base from which to disseminate that disinformation, the report said. After Taiwan, Latvia and Palestine ranked second and third respectively, while Nicaragua, North Korea, Venezuela and China, in that order, were the countries that spread the most disinformation, the report said. Each country listed in the report was given a score,
POOR PREPARATION: Cultures can form on food that is out of refrigeration for too long and cooking does not reliably neutralize their toxins, an epidemiologist said Medical professionals yesterday said that suspected food poisoning deaths revolving around a restaurant at Far Eastern Department Store Xinyi A13 Store in Taipei could have been caused by one of several types of bacterium. Ho Mei-shang (何美鄉), an epidemiologist at Academia Sinica’s Institute of Biomedical Sciences, wrote on Facebook that the death of a 39-year-old customer of the restaurant suggests the toxin involved was either “highly potent or present in massive large quantities.” People who ate at the restaurant showed symptoms within hours of consuming the food, suggesting that the poisoning resulted from contamination by a toxin and not infection of the
