A new interchange on the Formosa Freeway (National Freeway No. 3) on Monday opened to traffic in Nantou County.
Vice President Wu Den-yih (吳敦義), a Nantou native and a former county commissioner, said at the opening ceremony that the Nanyun (南雲) interchange would help ease traffic congestion in Lugu (鹿谷) and Jhushan (竹山) townships during holidays and promote local growth.
County residents expressed the need for such an interchange when he was a legislator from 2002 to 2009 and now they will have more convenient access to the freeway network, Wu said.
The Nanyun interchange at the freeway’s 250km mark is located between the Jhushan interchange to the north and the Douliou (斗六) interchange to the south.
It provides more direct access to the southern part of Jhushan, and will save local residents 15 to 30 minutes in getting on the freeway. It also brings motorists closer to the tourist areas of Lugu and Sitou Township (溪頭).
Construction on the NT$600 million (US$18.63 million at current exchange rates) project began in April 2014.
The Nantou County Government said the interchange would significantly cut travel time between Yunlin, Nantou and Changhua counties.

Ho Mei-shang (何美鄉), an epidemiologist at Academia Sinica’s Institute of Biomedical Sciences, wrote on Facebook that the death of a 39-year-old customer of the restaurant suggests the toxin involved was either “highly potent or present in massive large quantities.” People who ate at the restaurant showed symptoms within hours of consuming the food, suggesting that the poisoning resulted from contamination by a toxin and not infection of the
