Staff writer, with CNA

Two junior-high school students yesterday came forward to admit to placing cement blocks on a railway track in Hualien County.

The driver of the Puyuma-class train, Chan Yu-hsien (詹易暹), was about to pull into Jian Station (吉安) on Tuesday afternoon when he saw something on the tracks and put on the brakes.

The teens told police that they had put the blocks, which weighing more than 10kg each, and some stones on the rails for fun.

They said did not realize how serious the prank was until the incident was reported in the media.
