Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) on Saturday said that the city government plans to recruit 30,000 volunteers for administrative work and to provide services during the Summer Universiade, which is scheduled to take place on Aug. 19 to Aug. 30, 2017.
In December 2011, the Taipei City Government won the right to host the Universiade, an international multisport event organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation.
At an assembly of the more than 1,000 volunteers who have already signed up, Ko said that a city needs such an event to consolidate its strength.
About 12,000 athletes from 160 countries are scheduled to arrive in Taipei for the Universiade, and the volunteers will be needed to carry out administrative tasks and to work as receptionists and provide other services.
Ko said the city government expects 18,000 students and 12,000 people from other walks of life to sign up as volunteers for the event.
The 2017 Taipei Summer Universiade includes the following 14 compulsory events: athletics, basketball, fencing, soccer, gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, judo, aquatics, water polo, diving, table tennis, tennis, volleyball and taekwondo.
There are also to be seven optional events chosen by the host city: archery, badminton, baseball, golf, roller sports, weightlifting and wushu.

Al-Jazeera said it changed Shao’s name to respect his wish for anonymity. If peaceful unification is not possible, Shao said he would prefer “things to remain as they are,” adding that many of his friends feel

Po made the remarks in response to a question from Democratic Progressive Party Legislator Chiu Chih-wei (邱志偉) on whether Taiwan would have partial or complete air superiority if Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) warplanes were to enter Taiwan’s airspace. Po, a retired pilot, said that the Taiwanese military has “absolute air superiority” over PLA
