Traffic flowing well so far over Dragon Boat long weekend

Staff writer, with CNA

Traffic flows generally appeared smooth yesterday, the start of the Dragon Boat Festival long weekend, except on certain sections of national freeways, the National Freeway Bureau said.

As of 9am yesterday, traffic was flowing well, but there was some congestion in New Taipei City on Formosa Freeway (Freeway No. 3) between Tucheng (土城) and Dasi (大溪); on the Chiang Wei-shui Memorial Freeway (Freeway No. 5) between Pinglin (坪林) and Toucheng (頭城); and on the National Sun Yat-sen Freeway (Freewat No. 1) between Hukou (湖口) in Hsinchu County and Hsinchu, and Changhua County’s Wangtien (王田) and Puyen (埔鹽), the bureau said.

It said there was alot of traffic on those sections because many people were taking advantage of the sunny weather.

On the congested sections of freeways No. 1 and No. 3 the traffic was moving at about 40kph, while on the Pinglin-to-Toucheng section of Freeway No. 5 it was moving at 60kph, the bureau said.

The Hsuehshan Tunnel is on the Pinglin-to-Toucheng section.

On other sections of Freeway No. 5 the traffic was flowing normally, according to the bureau.

To prevent serious traffic jams on national freeways during the Dragon Boat holiday the bureau has introduced measures such as a suspension of tolls between 11pm and 6am daily.

In addition, it imposed a minimum vehicle occupancy rule yesterday, with vehicles carrying fewer than three people not allowed on the southbound lanes of Freeway No. 5 yesterday from 9am until 12pm.

The bureau is also encouraging travelers on the popular Taipei-to-Yilan route to take public transport to reduce the volume of traffic on Freeway No. 5.
