The Taoyuan Union of Pilots yesterday said that it would not go on strike after it reached several agreements with China Airlines (CAL) on Thursday night.
The union was founded in May last year. A majority of the union members are pilots of CAL, the nation’s largest airline.
After failing to settle a labor dispute with the airline, the union obtained the legal right to go on strike in March by putting the motion to a vote among its members, with all the votes favoring the proposal.
To resolve the crisis, the union said that the airline company then sought to negotiate with the pilots on May 11. Both sides reached preliminary consensuses on important issues, it said.
The union said that it had a second negotiation meeting with CAL on Thursday, in which both parties succeeded in reaching compromises on the collective agreement and six other issues.
Regarding the result, the union said that it was glad to see the airline, as a leader in the nation’s aviation industry, listen to what its employees have to say and respond in good will.
“It [CAL] was willing to improve the work environment to keep capable individuals and enhance aviation safety. The result was not only a win-win situation for both the employer and the workers, but it also helped safeguard aviation safety for the public,” the union said in a statement.
The union also called for other flight carriers to follow suit in improving the work environment for pilots. It urged other pilots to join the union to form a united front against unreasonable labor conditions.
CAL also issued a statement assuring the public that the airline’s pilots would not go on strike.
The company reiterated that it would take care of its employees and create maximum profits for its shareholders.
“Employees are the company’s assets,” the company said. “We will continue to listen to our employees and communicate with them with the utmost sincerity.”
