Keelung police are investigating a homicide in which a 32-year-old man is alleged to have stabbed his former girlfriend to death after she broke off their relationship.

The suspect, Chiu Chia-ming (邱家銘), is alleged to have killed a 20-year-old surnamed Yu (余) on a street in Keelung late on Thursday night, then stabbed himself in an apparent suicide bid.

A passerby alerted the police in the early hours of Friday and both Chiu and Yu were rushed to hospital. While Yu died from her wounds, Chiu’s wounds were not life-threatening and he was in stable condition yesterday.

The Keelung District Prosecutors’ Office said that Chiu was found with three knives and that he allegedly stabbed Yu seven times, in what could have been a premeditated murder.

While receiving medical treatment, Chiu admitted to stabbing his former girlfriend to death, a police officer said.

Chiu said he believed his former girlfriend belonged to him, and after allegedly stabbing her to death, Chiu stabbed himself before embracing Yu on the ground in an attempt to die together, police officers said.

Yu’s elder sister told police investigators that, following Yu’s graduation from a vocational college in Keelung, she held an apprenticeship at a major hotel in Taipei and later worked as an assistant at a dental clinic.

Yu’s sister said that Yu dated Chiu intermittently for only three or four months, but after they broke up, Chiu harassed her younger sister and threatened her with violence.

Authorities urged the public to avoid being alone when breaking off a relationship and to report any threatening behavior from estranged partners to the police.
