Heavy rain brought by the first monsoon front of the year caused flooding in parts of Changhua County and Taichung, the Water Resources Agency reported yesterday.
The agency has issued level 1 flood alerts for Changhua’s Dacheng (大城), Fangyuan (芳苑), Puyan (埔鹽) and Fusing (福興) townships in view of the continuing rainfall.
Level 2 flood alerts have been issued for Taichung’s Daan (大安), Dajia (大甲) and Waipu (外埔) districts, as well as for Changhua’s Erlin (二林) and Sioushuei (秀水) townships.

Level 1 flood warnings are issued for areas where rainfall has begun to inundate townships and roads, while level 2 alerts are issued for areas that are likely to see flooding within three hours.
The Central Weather Bureau said that a rain front would continue to affect the nation through the weekend, bringing wind gusts and thunderstorms to central, northern and northeastern Taiwan.
The bureau also issued a heavy rain alert for those areas, warning of accumulated daily rainfall of more than 130mm.
Forecasters said flooding is likely in low-lying areas.
During the plum rain season, frontal systems tend to linger around Taiwan, resulting in consecutive days of severe thunderstorms and heavy rain.
The most intense rainfall during the plum rain season usually takes place between mid-May and mid-June, the bureau said.

Heat advisories were in effect for nine administrative regions yesterday afternoon as warm southwesterly winds pushed temperatures above 38°C in parts of southern Taiwan, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said.
