On the eve of Mother’s Day, the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) yesterday released poll results showing that mothers in the nation are most concerned about food safety issues, followed by long-term care of elderly people and children.
Citing the results of the poll, DPP Department of Women’s Development director Lin Ching-yi (林靜儀) said that 84.5 percent of the nation’s mothers are dissatisfied with the government’s performance in food safety, followed by 52.9 percent displeased with long-term efforts to care for elderly people and 38.6 percent unhappy with childcare initiatives.
When asked what they are most worried about, food safety still topped the list with 27.9 percent, family economics followed with 11.3 percent and care of the elderly came third with 9 percent, Lin said.
“The results reflect the worries and dissatisfaction of mothers in the nation, and it is the unavoidable responsibility of the government to deal with those issues,” Lin said. “These issues top the priority list for the DPP and DPP Chairperson Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) to work on.”
One woman who attended the news conference, surnamed Hsia (夏), the mother of a high-school student, said that the poll actually echoed her thoughts.
“My son often eats out as he is preparing for the college entrance exam, and with continuous revelations of tainted food items, I am very worried that he might be exposed to unsafe food that could harm his health,” Hsia said. “I would like the government to come up with an effective way ti prevent tainted foods from entering the market.”
Another woman, surnamed Chiu (邱), who has two children, complained of a lack of public childcare programs.
“Insufficient public childcare resources have long been a problem, especially when low-income, Aboriginal and new immigrant families have priority for public childcare,” she said. “Lack of affordable childcare forces many women to quit their jobs.”
Meanwhile, Chiu’s mother urged the government to present a better system to care for elderly people and to lessen the burden on her children.
Lin said that while everyone is wishing mothers a happy Mother’s Day, the DPP would work to make mothers happy every day.
A group of Taiwanese-American and Tibetan-American students at Harvard University on Saturday disrupted Chinese Ambassador to the US Xie Feng’s (謝鋒) speech at the school, accusing him of being responsible for numerous human rights violations. Four students — two Taiwanese Americans and two from Tibet — held up banners inside a conference hall where Xie was delivering a speech at the opening ceremony of the Harvard Kennedy School China Conference 2024. In a video clip provided by the Coalition of Students Resisting the CCP (Chinese Communist Party), Taiwanese-American Cosette Wu (吳亭樺) and Tibetan-American Tsering Yangchen are seen holding banners that together read:
UNAWARE: Many people sit for long hours every day and eat unhealthy foods, putting them at greater risk of developing one of the ‘three highs,’ an expert said More than 30 percent of adults aged 40 or older who underwent a government-funded health exam were unaware they had at least one of the “three highs” — high blood pressure, high blood lipids or high blood sugar, the Health Promotion Administration (HPA) said yesterday. Among adults aged 40 or older who said they did not have any of the “three highs” before taking the health exam, more than 30 percent were found to have at least one of them, Adult Preventive Health Examination Service data from 2022 showed. Heat advisories were in effect for nine administrative regions yesterday afternoon as warm southwesterly winds pushed temperatures above 38°C in parts of southern Taiwan, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. As of 3:30pm yesterday, Tainan’s Yujing District (玉井) had recorded the day’s highest temperature of 39.7°C, though the measurement will not be included in Taiwan’s official heat records since Yujing is an automatic rather than manually operated weather station, the CWA said. Highs recorded in other areas were 38.7°C in Kaohsiung’s Neimen District (內門), 38.2°C in Chiayi City and 38.1°C in Pingtung’s Sandimen Township (三地門), CWA data showed. The spell of scorching
