Red Cross issues appeal to help Syrian refugees

Staff writer, with CNA

The Red Cross Society of the Republic of China on Monday called for donations to purchase 10,000 food parcels for Syrian refugees who have been displaced by civil war.

More than 12 million people have been displaced by the fighting and more than 200,000 have been killed since 2011, Red Cross Society chairwoman Wang Ching-feng (王清峰) said.

She said the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent are raising funds to buy 500,000 parcels of food, and the Red Cross Society is looking to supply 10,000 of them.

Each parcel is to contain items such as rice, sugar, salt, oil, canned tuna, canned beans and wheat flour that can feed a family of five for a month, and will cost NT$2,250, which includes procurement, transportation and distribution fees.

The Syrian refugees are in dire need of food, the group said, and it called on Taiwanese to extend a helping hand.

Earlier this year, the society donated 500 diesel stoves and 1,000 food parcels to Syrian refugees, it said.

The public can make online donations at: redcross.org.tw/home.jsp?pageno=201210040001&ptype=2 or they can wire money to Hua Nan Bank account 121-20-015586-1 (Ho Ping Branch) or send a postal money order to account number 15978888.

Mobile phone owners can also make donations by dialing 55135.
