MAC cautions travelers to HK amid protest clashes

By Shih Hsiu-chuan  /  Staff reporter

After violent scuffles broke out late on Friday as the “Occupy Central” movement demanding full democracy in Hong Kong entered its sixth day, the Mainland Affairs Council yesterday warned the public to avoid going to Mong Kok, Causeway Bay or other protest venues that could be unsafe to visit.

The council said it is very concerned about the situation in Hong Kong and has asked its office there to keep it abreast of the latest developments.

There have not been any reported cases of Taiwanese seeking help from the council’s office in Hong Kong, but people planning to travel to the territory are advised to have the office’s contact details handy in case of an emergency.

The office is at 40/F, Tower One, Lippo Centre, 89 Queensway, and can be contacted at 852-61439012 and 852-93140130.
