A limping yellow mongrel that has only one foreleg and one hind leg has recently been spotted wandering around a public cemetery in Bade City (八德), Taoyuan County, arousing sympathy among passersby.

The dog’s right front leg has been severed at the kneecap and it is also missing a hind leg, so it can only move about in small leaps as it struggles to maintain its balance.

According to people living near the cemetery, the dog is scared of people, spending most of its time hiding under vehicles and only coming out to find food when there is no one around.

Whenever someone approaches, it runs away and hides, the residents said.

Its eyes are full of sorrow and fear, some have said.

A male resident surnamed Huang (黃) said the dog may have lost its legs after being run over by a car or abused by its former keeper.

He said he would like to adopt the dog, but he already has five strays and there is not enough room in his house. He urged animal protection groups and dog lovers to adopt the dog.

Chen Chun-hsiung (陳俊雄), a Taoyuan City-based veterinarian, said it is unusual to find a stray dog that has such severe injuries.

He said it is not uncommon to find dogs that have lost one leg. He has also heard of dogs with either only the two front or hind legs remaining, but it was the first time he saw one with one left foreleg and one right hind leg remaining.

This makes it doubly difficult for the dog to move and could cause arthritis or scoliosis when it gets older, he said, adding that the dog desperately needs a new home.
