The Centers for Disease Control yesterday warned of the growing enterovirus threat which is expected to peak late this month.
There have been four cases of enterovirus infection with severe complications in Taiwan so far this year, the centers said.
The latest patient was an 18-month-old boy, who has recovered after developing a fever and seizure-like symptoms late last month.
The centers urged the public to pay special attention to their personal hygiene as the number of enterovirus patients seeking emergency treatment grows.
A surge in enterovirus cases in neighboring countries has made prevention more challenging for Taiwan, the centers said.
The centers warned that infants and children under five are most vulnerable to enterovirus infection and its complications, and advised parents with children suffering from a persistent fever, drowsiness, inactivity or continuous vomiting to take them to a doctor.
The Taipei Department of Health yesterday said it has launched a probe into a restaurant at Far Eastern Sogo Xinyi A13 Department Store after a customer died of suspected food poisoning. A preliminary investigation on Sunday found missing employee health status reports and unsanitary kitchen utensils at Polam Kopitiam (寶林茶室) in the department store’s basement food court, the department said.
