A charity road running event in Taipei aims to raise awareness for the protection of wild animals on July 6, the first birthday of the nation’s first giant panda cub, Yuan Zai (圓仔), according to Shin Kong Financial Holding Co, the event organizers.

The event is to include a 10km race starting at 6am in front of the Taipei Zoo, the event organizers said.

Participants are to run along Xinguang Road Sec 2 and pass by Ching Lung Temple in Muzha District (木柵) before returning to the zoo.

Besides the race, the event will include a power walking group that will engage in games in the zoo, organizers said.

The winners of the men’s and women’s 10km race are to be awarded NT$10,000 each. Second to fifth-place finishers are to receive NT$8,000, NT$6,000, NT$4,000 and NT$2,000 respectively.

Registration fees for the event — NT$700 per person for the 10km race and NT$300 per person for the power walking group — will be donated to the Zoological Society of Taipei to help raise gorillas and will be used for wildlife conservation, according to organizers.

At the event, the Taipei Zoo is to prepare a birthday cake to celebrate panda cub Yuan Zai’s first birthday.

Her parents are Tuan Tuan (團團) and Yuan Yuan (圓圓), a pair of giant pandas given to Taiwan four years ago by China.
