By Rich Chang  /  Staff reporter

Three men were detained by the Hsinchu District Court yesterday on suspicion of attacking a group of college students in a KTV, leaving one in critical condition.

According to Hsinchu police, 13 college students were holding a birthday party at a KTV in Hsinchu City on Tuesday at midnight.

When the party ended and they went out to the hall of the KTV chatting and laughing, a group of young men in the hall who were reportedly drunk thought they were laughing at them and assaulted the students.

Police cited witness accounts as saying that a student surnamed Chen (陳), who was still in the KTV room when the fight started and wearing a helmet, heard the screaming and said: “I am going to urge the attackers to stop.”

Police said that after beating the students with their bare hands, the attackers went to their cars and took out knifes and baseball bats to continue their assault.

After asking the men to stop their attack, Chen became their sole target, police said, adding that his helmet fell off his head amid the scuffle and he was struck on the head with baseball bats.

Chen suffered intracranial hemorrhaging and is in a coma, police said.

The three have been detained on charges of attempted homicide.
